Taking a road trip through South Africa, must be one of the highlights of my travel experiences. Of course everyone loves point to point transfers and maybe some limo hire in Cape Town, well if you are the rich and famous. But nothing compares to getting in a car with a couple of friends and just taking to the open road.
For my trip I did not have a set plan we just picked a road a drove, with our Garmin on hand to make sure we didn’t end up in any dangerous places. It was great. We started off in Cape Town and drove until we hit the Kalahari, it was amazing as we spent a lot of time her and got to know all the people in the area. They are not as primitive as “the Gods must be Crazy” would let you believe, but are a beautiful people. Anyway it then was a drive until we reached Bloem, of course we stopped along the way at many different cafes, stores and activity areas, and basically any place that we knew would add value to the trip.
Once in Bloem we spent time at the local watering holes and vibed with the locals. It was absolutely great, such a friendly place and once a few beers were down they were quite happy to tell us a story or two. A man by the name of Jan Botha was completely in love with us and let us stay at his farm free of charge, what a great country .
Then it was off to Durban, the place of Summer the land of dolphins and the sharks. Home of the best Rugby team in the country. The beach was so good and we spend many a sunny day in the ocean and on the sand. The local cuisine and people were ever so friendly and I can’t wait to see whet the next part of my journey holds.
